Ledger Art is an Indigenous art form that began in the late 19th century. At that time, Native American artists started drawing in ledger books — old accounting books that were available through trade and contact with settlers.
They used ink, pencils, and watercolours to record scenes from their daily lives, ceremonies, and battles. In this way, Ledger Art became a unique way to preserve their culture and identity during a time of great change.
Today, many contemporary Indigenous artists have rediscovered Ledger Art and use it again to express modern ideas and experiences while keeping a connection to their traditions.
In this workshop, we will look at examples of Ledger Art, share our impressions, and discuss our ideas. It will be an interesting and creative way to practice speaking English and learn more about this extraordinary form of Indigenous art.
